Students were asked to produce a multimedia CD-ROM addressing an issue in which they had a personal interest. John elected to produce a CD-ROM about the Kaimai Ranges because he identified a lack of interactive resources outlining things to do and see in the region.

The CD-ROM had to be accurate, user-friendly, meet all relevant legal requirements (including international copyright laws) and the expectations of the target audience (people with little or no outdoor experience). It had to be compatible with a range of operating systems and meet all stakeholder requirements.

After doing extensive research, John set about his task with imagination and flair. Image from John's CDThe CD-ROM is well designed, interactive and colourful, and includes:

  • a gallery with a wide range of pictures from the ranges
  • information about important tracks
  • detailed maps showing points of interest
  • location of and key information about Department of Conservation huts

Teacher comment
