Botany Downs Secondary College
Year 11 Technology, Multi-materials, Full-year project

NCEA Level 1 student Dimitri Glynos was asked to research the issue of storage and identify a stakeholder who needed a solution to a storage problem. Through his technological practice Dimitri established and negotiated a need for a jewellery box for his stakeholder.

As Dimitri was new to Technology, he had difficulty visualising conceptual ideas and lacked the skills to effectively test ideas in a design-sketch format. His teacher encouraged him to model ideas digitally, using ProDeskTop. This allowed him to test concepts, problem-solve and modify ideas relatively easily and visualise and develop concepts in a very realistic media, long before final production.

Developing the drawer for the jewellery box and working out how to make it run was made easier by being able to slide it in and out, virtually. Developing the hinged lid for the box was complicated by the inclusion of a mirror on the inside of the lid. Fixing the mirror in place involved rebating the top edge of the box itself. That this was necessary became obvious when the fixing method was tested on the virtual model.

Teacher comment

"The degree of understanding from Dimitri has been greatly improved. His effective use of the 3D solid modelling programme surely helped him visualise how the different components of his technological solution worked to form a unit."
