Clean, Green and Safe
Paraparaumu College
Year 12, Level 2 ICT Technology, Full year
Teacher: Tricia Winter

Tricia challenged her ICT class to address an issue and come up with a solution with the theme of 'Clean, Green, and Safe'. Jason decided to redesign his classroom, and asked Tricia to be his stakeholder. When he interviewed her, he found she considered the classroom confining and felt it could be changed into a more workable, welcoming arrangement.

Jason considered alternative layouts that would improve the classroom while leaving it fit for purpose. To increase his understanding of room design and layout, he contacted a local architect for advice. The internet yielded contacts for several technologists in Canada and the UK who Jason contacted for advice as well.

After compiling this advice and his stakeholder interviews, Jason developed a 3D model. Sections of the virtual room were designed as work stations so students could work in smaller groups and, towards the front, he designated a 'chill out' zone where students could rest and recharge.

Jason considered how best to minimise the environmental footprint of his design. He used solar heating panels and opted for wooden rather than plastic furniture throughout. He gave the room a curved wall to maximise natural lighting.

Aware that an inspired ICT student can spend a great deal of time on a computer, Jason opted for ergonomically-friendly furniture that would promote a healthy posture for his class mates. He considered where best to locate light switches and hot points and how to design the flow of the room to accommodate his teacher's habit of walking and moving while teaching.

Teacher comment

Tricia was particularly impressed by Jason's ability to criticise and evaluate his own work: on finishing his project he was immediately reflecting on what he had learnt and how he could have made improvements, she said.

"Jason is a brilliant and thorough student. He never gives up. All the 'i's are dotted and the 't's are crossed. He is constantly thinking of how he can improve something and his research is extensive. His skills are multi-disciplinary and he is a brilliant communicator."
