Vincent Oakes
Mini-golf putting green
St John's College
Year 11 Materials Technology
Duration: 30 weeks
Teacher: Steve Andrew
St John's College has a growing roll; students were asked to research and identify new activities that could be introduced to the school in response to this growth. Activities that made use of the underused areas/facilities of the school.
Vincent identified the school's new astro turf area could be used for additional activities, both at lunchtimes and as part of the senior PE programme. He decided to develop an activity that was suitable for both indoor and outdoor use; as a keen golfer, Vincent decided a portable putting green would be an appropriate solution.
To make the activity a truly challenging, Vincent decided to offer nine alternative courses. This was achieved by creating a set of removable obstacles that could be arranged in different configurations on the mini-green. Materials were selected and construction, particularly jointing, methods tested.
Teacher comment
"Because Vincent is a golfer, he was highly interested and motivated throughout the whole unit. The prototype was completed to a very good standard. Testing its fitness for purpose showed that the activity definitely was of interesting for the identified age group. It was suitably demanding to play and could be used in the areas he designed it for. Students at our school have had many hours of fun participating in this activity."
