Bells of ireland

Bells of Ireland

Bells of Ireland (Moluccella laevis) are our main product. They have green funnel shaped bells on long green stems. The bells are closely packed along the stem and have a papery texture. They grow to between 3 and 4 feet tall. In side the bell there is a tiny white and purple flower. There are small thorns below each bell. We sell them mostly to Bexleys flowers and a smaller amount to the Auckland flower markets. The price of each stem can be up to 80 cents.


Scabiosa

Scabiosa is member of the Dipsacaceae family. We grow many different colours including blue, white and purple. They have two-inch flowers that bloom on slender 12- to 15-inch stems all year round. The leaves are hairy, ovate to lance-shaped, with the upper foliage smaller and finely divided creating a mounded rosette six to eight inches high and 12 to 15 inches wide. The plant is 24-36 inches high.


Limonium

Limonium has narrow stalks which branch off into many slender stems, each branching into further stemlets bearing several tiny papery flowers. The flowers look very good as a bunch or by themselves or as an ideal filler in an arrangement. They grow in shades of purple and pink. They can also be dried and used in permanent flower arrangements.


Nigella

Nigella, also known as love in a mist grows 30-40 cm tall and comes in many colours including pink, rose/mauve, magenta (pink-purple), light blue, medium blue, dark blue, blue-violet, violet/lavender, purple and white/near white. The seed-pods are also uses in arrangements and crafts. It is a common cottage garden flower and is often dried. The oil from the nigella seed is often used as a natural remedy.


Lambs Ear

Lambs Ear

Lambs Ear (Stachys byzantina) is a low growing plant with soft foliage that resembles lambs ears. It sends up flower spikes that grow up to 18 inches height. The long flower spikes picked and used in floral arrangements. Lambs ear has almost problems no with snails when grown hydroponically as they are unable to reach them. It also gets much longer flower spikes than when grown in soil.

We also grow a variety of succulent which is used by florists in arrangements. It grows several feet tall and has deep red leaves and yellow flowers.
