  • Laser-based camera can see around corners
    Physorg.com, 17 November
Researchers from MIT have developed a camera that can capture images of a scene that is not in its direct line of sight. The camera is equipped with a femtosecond laser, which fires extremely short bursts of light that can reflect off one object (such as a door or mirror) and then a second object before reflecting back to the first object and being captured by the camera. Algorithms can then use this information to reconstruct the hidden scene.
  • Gadget checks driver safety
    Stuff.co.nz, 20 November
A gadget that checks the safety of drivers and vehicles has won a Christchurch teenage inventor a national technology award.
Homeschool pupil Reuben Posthuma, 16, of St Albans, won his age-group category at the 2010 ETITO Bright Sparks Awards for young inventors with his device that verifies the driver's licence before it will allow the engine to start. The Driver Minder also wirelessly checks a specially-designed website to see if the car's warrant and registration are current and uses GPS to display the car's speed and the area's speed limit.
  • Top award for firm that put GPS on farmers' maps
    Manawatu Standard, 20 November
In only five years, WMC Technology has grown its farming services business to export globally - and now it is Manawatu Business of the Year.
At the black-tie awards dinner at the Awapuni Racecourse last night, the firm was on the podium three times, also taking home the innovation in the Manawatu and ACC workplace safety categories.
Director George Ricketts said the night was "awesome".
The company, established in 2005 and now with six fulltime staff, has two trading divisions: Farm mapping service Wheresmycows.com and Precision Irrigation.
