Our Google Group has started with such topics as designing innovative curriculum programmes, and advice on how to plan for and assess student learning, including NCEA and clarifying external NCEA assessment. To join you just need to have current HETTANZ membership.
HETTANZ a charity
HETTANZ has now been listed as a charity – lots of thanks to Prue Rehu, Elizabeth Ross and Heather Dixon for their hard work getting this organised. This charitable status will enable us to make better use of our funds for teachers and students.
Curriculum workshops
I would encourage you to support any curriculum workshops in your region, as they are a great starting point for professional development and chance to keep in contact with teachers who might be having the same issues as you.

Reinventing Vintage Patternmaking

Year 12
Teacher: Julie Clement/Sue Hannaway
Curriculum links: CMT Specialist Teaching Strand curriculum level 7 AS91350
The students research the 1960s design era, explore textile processes and produce a textile swatch book. They use the tunic block to adapt a pattern for a 1960s inspired garment. When thinking about patternmaking Julie and Sue talked about challenges of the amount of paper, fabric and space required. The idea of using ½ scale mannequins and ½ scale patterns solved this dilemma as patterns, mock ups and toiles could be developed and refined ½ scale. When the final pattern is created; it can then be upscaled to the full size block and the prototype is then created. This has been a great outcome for both teachers and students who see patternmaking as an integral component of the Fashion and Textiles Technology programme of learning.
High Tea

Year 12 (Level 2)
Teacher: Elizabeth Ross
Curriculum links: Level 7 Technological Practice; Brief Development and Planning for Practice (Achievement Standard 2.1 and 2.2).
The project is in two parts. In the first part, the students brainstorm and select a significant other to celebrate an achievement – for example, Nan’s 70th birthday, making Waikato Chief squad, a First Anniversary. They write a brief to address the opportunity to celebrate this through food.
The second part is making the Brief come alive. Students research what a High Tea is, the expectations of preparing and presenting a High Tea, i.e. materials, resources, HACCP plan, interviewing the stakeholder (unless it is a surprise), researching possible ideas and recipes and then cost them so that they can trial and test the different food ideas before developing a production plan to develop the outcome.
The student engagement is huge as the students are doing for their special person and are able (within the brief) to make what they like. They really seem to step up with the presentation of the food items.
