Aimee's cell-phone holder

Havelock North Intermediate
Year 8 Materials Technology, eight 1.5 hour lessons
Teacher: Doug Sutherland

Aimee was asked to design and make a holding device for a portable electronic device, and decided to create a holder for her cell phone.

Aimee had not worked with plastics before. Together with her class, she explored the working properties of acrylic through task sheets and by making a small acrylic finger skate board or key tag.

Aimee then drew a full-size drawing of her cellphone and a concept drawing of the holder showing how it would be held. As part of her development she then modeled her concept in card, to examine the aesthetics of the design and test its functionality. The model was photographed and notes of the modifications recorded on the photograph.

Aimee then refined her brief and specifications before drawing a final design and constructing her solution.

Teacher comment

This was Aimee's first experience in working with plastic as a material. She designed a smart looking cell phone holder that met her specific needs – that her cell phone would need to sit in an upright position, that there should be no sharp edges, and that it be brightly coloured – fluro-pink. Her final solution was well made.
