TESAC 2013: Conference update From t-news issue 64, July 2013 ‘Connect - putting the pieces together’
7-9 October, Wellington High School;
meet and greet Sunday 6 October
Planning
Planning for this conference is now in the countdown stage. The current focus is on the workshop sessions and how best to assist delegates to make informed choices.
During the July holidays the planning committee will finalise workshop/presenter information, which will then be sent out early in Term 3.
Meantime, featured this month are snapshots of a range of conference presenters. The mantra of TRCC is ‘teachers for teachers’ – and many of the workshops are being presented by teachers.
Sponsorship
Sponsorship is now gathering momentum, but if you know of any firms, businesses and the like which might be interested in sponsoring a teachers' conference, please send contact details to Carmel Clark [email protected]
A conference can never have too much sponsorship and remember this conference is likely to include representation from nearly every intermediate and secondary school in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Conference workshop snapshots
The overviews of the following presentations/workshops are given to encourage those who have not yet registered to do so! All of these workshops feature in Monday’s conference programme, and each utilises ‘technology’ exemplifying the direction of 21st century education.
Fashion and Textiles Digital Technologies (Julie Clements)
Julie Clements teaches at Wellington Girls' College and is the Head of Technology. Julie’s workshop will give a teacher’s perspective on Digital Technologies in the teaching of Fashion and Design. Her workshop will show the value of incorporating digital technologies into project briefs. Julie will expose participants to a range of digital technologies that can be used in the contemporary teaching and learning environment. She will cover ICT-related activities such as blogs, pinterest, skype, digital printing and outsourcing of manufacturing. Her presentation will be supported with exemplars that will show how the breadth and scope of practice in contemporary Technology education can be extended – specifically through Fashion and Design.
Kinect with 3D printers (Gary Brinsden)
Gary Brinsden is a teacher at Pakuranga College and director of Innovative 3D Technologies. Gary’s workshop targets all areas of Technology. He will show the development of 3D printing in the classroom and its use in functional modelling and prototype building. Gary will also show participants how to use Microsoft Xbox Kinects cameras to produce 3D scans. This workshop will appeal to owners and potential owners of 3D printers.
Good food choices and the internet (Glenda Gourley)
Glenda Gourley has had an extensive association with the food industry in New Zealand. With her teenage daughter Claire, she has now established a dual strategy to work with parents and children. The intent is to give children the skills to be food savvy so they can take better care of themsleves. Research findings show children who can cook, are more
likely to make good food choices. This workshop will show use of tools such as websites, newsletters, blogs, e-books, books, online holiday cooking programmes, YouTube and social media as sustainable approaches to encouraging and teaching children to cook.
Claire will present an approach to children and cooking, which is fun, yet down-to-earth, practical and stand-alone. She will show how parents can be empowered to support their children to gain food skills that will last a lifetime.
