May update 2007

Promoting Technology feature added to Techlink

At the beginning of May, Techlink added the Promoting Technology feature to display information on promotional developments, monthly web-statistics and an archive containing scanned copies of articles reflecting positive technology education activities.

ICT Article

An article outlining ICT activities at Katikati College and Hillcrest High School was submitted to Computers in New Zealand Schools magazine. The article was written with input from Malcolm Howard (HoD Technology Katikati College) and Jenny Baker (HoD Technology Hillcrest High School) and will be published in the November edition of the magazine.

Computers in New Zealand Schools is published three times a year by the University of Otago and is New Zealand's only magazine for teachers (pre-school to tertiary levels), who use computers and the Internet in the classroom. The journal publishes articles, many by teachers themselves, on all aspects of computers in education, with emphasis on practical applications and on professional development. It features reports on educational research, fresh teaching ideas and critical comment including software and book reviews.

Article and advert published in Principals Today

During May, an article on the growing profile of technology education, with references to Techlink's Student Showcase, was published in Principals Today magazine and accompanied by an advertisement. A copy of this article is located here.

The article and advertisment resulted in an increase in website visitors. This is illustrated in May's website statistics.

Online Student Showcase submission document

One of the main foci for Techlink at the moment is gaining Student Showcase submissions from teachers at schools both inside and outside the Beacon Practice initiative. Take a look at the guidelines to submitting Student Showcase drafts.

A published Student Showcase can help lift the profile of technology education and the school. Over the last three months the Student Showcase website has received over 7,500 visits. Some Showcase entries have resulted in articles in local and national newspapers, as well as magazines. To keep that interest high I need to continually publish new profiles from both Beacon and non-Beacon schools.

Bookmarks in IET Electronics Education magazine

An opportunity was extended to Techlink to provide promotional bookmarks to the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) who intend to distribute them where appropriate.

IET produces Electronics Education, an online magazine for teachers to support teaching and learning in electronics. Content includes electronics, computing, engineering careers and related topics, and reviews of software, books and educational products. Content is highly relevant to the New Zealand curriculum.

Technology education booklet in production phase

Techlink is working on a fold-out promotional booklet using illustrations of Technology projects featured on the Student Showcase. The booklet will include information on Technology education, the skills and knowledge it develops, and the prospects it offers students.

More information on this booklet will be available towards the end of June.
