Cliff Harwood is the National NCEA Coordinator appointed by the Ministry of Education to support professional development in Technology this year.
Cliff is in his fifth year in his contracted position of National Technology Professional Development Manager. Before this, he was a Technology adviser and the Secondary Schools Professional Development Coordinator at the Centre for Educational Development in Massey University's College of Education. He is an experienced teacher, previously heading the Graphics and Technology Department at Awatapu College, Palmerston North for 15 years.
In a recent Education Gazette article Cliff talks about the three curriculum strands in the Technology curriculum in The New Zealand Curriculum 2007 (NZC) – Technological Practice, Technological Knowledge and the Nature of Technology. "Teachers have had to make significant changes to their teaching and learning programmes to incorporate these strands, to ensure alignment with the principles, vision, values and key competencies of the NZC, and to make sure students are provided with rich learning contexts that build upon their current knowledge, skills and competencies in and about Technology."
Cliff says the achievement standards, developed for Technology as a part of the Curriculum Alignment Project, have introduced a complete new suite of standards for teachers to use to credential students with NCEA qualifications. "While these standards have great alignment to the learning area of Technology, their flexibility in use is providing challenges for teachers as they align them with their teaching programmes," he says.
