Te Ara is the new official encyclopedia of New Zealand. The previous national encyclopedia was published in 1966. Instead of printing volumes of hardcopy, the Government's Ministry of Culture and Heritage is publishing the work online – the first time any country has created an official national encyclopedia in this way.
