Hard Materials Technology YEARs 1-6

Moveable Toys

Year 1-6 students at Green Bay Primary and Intermediate School worked on a two-term integrated unit How West Auckland has Changed in Technology, Social Studies and English. In Technology they considered toys from the past, made yo-yos and then developed moving toys. This case study looks at this unit and its delivery in each of the following class levels: New Entrants/Year 1; Year 2; Years 3-4 and Years 5-6.

Teacher guidance - Level 1

Technological Modelling

Guide students to identify that functional models are representations of potential Technological Outcomes and that they exist in many forms (e.g. thinking, talking, drawing, physical mock-ups, computer-aided simulations, etc)

  • Indicator: students can identify the purpose of functional modelling

Technological Products

Provide students with the opportunity to explore common materials and guide them to identify their performance properties

  • Indicator: students can identify performance properties of common materials
